The Egg Chair needs no introduction, but its ottoman deserves one. Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 as the essential companion to his most celebrated creation, this footstool completes the silhouette that has defined Danish modernism for over six decades.
The form is deceptively simple. A gently curved, upholstered shell rests on Fritz Hansen's signature satin-polished aluminium star base. The fabric stretches taut over the foam interior, following the organic contour that Jacobsen obsessed over during the development of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where the Egg Chair made its debut.
This example dates from the Fritz Hansen production line and retains its original fabric upholstery in presentable condition. The aluminium base shows the quality of finish that Fritz Hansen is known for, with the swivel mechanism operating smoothly.
Jacobsen's genius lay in treating furniture as architecture in miniature. The Egg, the Swan, the Series 7, each piece solved a spatial problem with sculptural elegance. The ottoman extends the Egg Chair's embrace downward, creating a complete lounging ecosystem that remains as relevant in a contemporary apartment as it was in Room 606 of the SAS Royal Hotel.
Paired with its chair or standing alone as a sculptural accent, this ottoman carries the quiet authority of a design that never needed to shout.
