Murano glass and brass, combined with the kind of confidence that only decades of glassmaking tradition can produce. This pendant lamp, attributed to Barovier & Toso, exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship that made mid-century Italian lighting among the most coveted in the world.
The central element is a frosted glass bowl that serves as the primary light source, encircled by an oval ring of clear, textured glass with a subtle ribbed pattern. Brass fittings elegantly secure the glass components, their warm metallic tone providing a visual bridge between the transparent and frosted elements. Above the main structure, a slender textured glass stem extends to a smaller bowl-shaped glass cap, connected by a straight brass rod that anchors the composition to the ceiling.
The interplay of materials is what elevates this from fixture to art object. Transparent and frosted glass create layers of light diffusion, while the brass accents add warmth and visual punctuation. At 95 centimetres in height, the lamp has a commanding vertical presence that works equally well above a dining table or in a grand entrance hall.
Barovier & Toso traces its origins to 1295, making it one of the oldest family businesses in the world. Their Murano workshop has produced glass for seven centuries, and the quality of craftsmanship evident in this pendant, the precision of the ribbing, the clarity of the glass, the refinement of the brass work, reflects that extraordinary heritage.
This pendant does not merely illuminate a room. It transforms the quality of light within it, creating an atmosphere of refined elegance that only genuine Murano glass can achieve.
