Eight hand-cut squares, arranged in two precise rows of four, transform the front of this blanket chest into something that hovers between furniture and relief sculpture. Made from solid oak in the Netherlands during the 1970s, it carries the unmistakable DNA of the Brutalist decorative arts movement.
The geometric pattern is the centrepiece. Each square has been individually cut by hand, the depth and texture varying slightly from panel to panel in a way that reveals the artisan's deliberate, unhurried approach. The oak grain runs through the carved surfaces, adding a natural layer of visual complexity to the geometric precision above. The overall effect is commanding: a piece of furniture that demands attention without raising its voice.
The construction is pure solid oak throughout, no veneers, no composite materials. At 108 centimetres wide and 64 centimetres tall, the proportions are balanced and the storage capacity is genuinely useful. The lid opens to reveal a clean interior ready for blankets, textiles, or whatever needs a beautiful home.
Brutalist furniture from the 1970s has experienced a remarkable revival in recent years, particularly among collectors and interior designers seeking pieces that provide textural contrast in minimalist spaces. The hand-cut geometric pattern offers a deliberate counterpoint to sleek, contemporary surfaces, introducing a layer of historical depth and artisanal character.
At the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or as a window seat, this chest bridges the gap between practical storage and decorative statement. It is the kind of piece that improves the room it enters.
