Inquire about this piece

Robert and Jean Cloutier belonged to a generation of French ceramists who treated everyday objects as canvases. This side table from the 1960s is a quiet masterpiece of their approach — a sleek steel frame elevated by a tabletop inlaid with carefully enameled ceramic tiles, three of which carry the brothers' signature hand-painted decorations.

The steel frame is minimal and elegant, allowing the ceramic work to take centre stage. The tiles have a tactile, slightly irregular quality that only handwork can produce — smooth glazed surfaces with subtle colour variations that catch the light differently throughout the day. An elastic holder on one side, designed for storing magazines and newspapers, adds an unexpectedly practical touch to what is otherwise a purely aesthetic object.

This table is in honest vintage condition. The ceramic tiles are intact and the steel frame is stable and true. Surface wear is consistent with sixty years of life and adds to the piece's character rather than detracting from it. The hand-painted decorations remain clear and vibrant.

The Cloutier brothers — Robert (1930-2008) and Jean (born 1930) — worked at the intersection of fine art and functional design throughout the post-war decades. Their ceramics, sculptures and furniture pieces are held in private collections across Europe and represent a distinctly French approach to the decorative arts — one that valued the artist's hand over industrial precision.

At just 40 centimetres high and 80 centimetres wide, this side table fits naturally beside a sofa or reading chair. It brings warmth, texture and a genuine piece of French artistic heritage into a living space — the kind of object that invites touch and rewards attention.
