Some objects earn their place in a room slowly, rewarding you the longer you live with them. This round patchwork pouf by De Sede is one of them — a dense, tactile piece of 1970s Swiss leatherwork that grows more beautiful with every year of use. In deep black leather, it is at once humble and unmistakably crafted.
The construction is what sets it apart. Dozens of individually hand-cut leather panels are stitched together into a diamond grid across the top, while a woven band of the same leather wraps the sides. Each panel catches the light differently, so the surface shifts between matte and gloss as you move around it. The leather is saddle-grade and supple, worked by hand into something that feels substantial rather than decorative.
This particular example is in very good vintage condition. The leather has developed exactly the kind of patina that cannot be faked — soft, faintly creased, darkened at the high points where hands and feet have rested for half a century. It is structurally sound and ready for daily use. The padded top lifts cleanly away to reveal a roomy hidden compartment inside — a practical secret that makes the pouf as useful as it is good-looking. Compact and round, roughly fifty centimetres across, it works as a footrest, an extra seat, a low side surface, or discreet storage.
De Sede has been a byword for leather mastery since the company formalised in 1965, growing out of a saddler's workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland. That heritage runs straight through this pouf: the same respect for hide, the same hand-stitching, the same belief that leather should be allowed to age honestly. Their patchwork series of the 1970s has become a quiet icon of the era, sitting comfortably alongside De Sede's celebrated sofas.
In a room, it does something a larger piece cannot — it grounds a corner, invites you to put your feet up, and adds warmth through texture alone. It is the kind of object you reach for without thinking, and the kind that looks better in ten years than it does today.
