Florence Knoll did not design furniture to draw attention to itself. She designed furniture to complete a room — and the Carrara marble coffee table is perhaps the purest expression of that philosophy. A square slab of Italian marble, 60 by 60 centimetres, resting on a minimal chrome steel base. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Carrara marble top has the cool, smooth surface and subtle grey veining that has made this Italian stone the material of choice for sculptors and architects for centuries. Each slab is unique — the veining pattern on this particular table is its fingerprint, unrepeatable and distinctly its own. The chrome steel base provides structural support with visual economy, its slender legs creating a sense of lightness beneath the substantial stone top.

This table is in good condition with wear consistent with its six decades of life. The marble surface shows the honest patina of use, the chrome base retains its finish, and the overall piece sits level and stable. Minor surface marks on the marble add character without compromising the table's clean aesthetic.

Florence Knoll (1917-2019) was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century American design. Trained at the Cranbrook Academy and the Illinois Institute of Technology under Mies van der Rohe, she brought an architectural discipline to furniture and interior design that transformed corporate and residential spaces alike. Her tables, sofas and credenzas — produced by the Knoll company she co-founded with Hans Knoll — became the furnishing vocabulary of modern American life.

This coffee table works in any interior that values material quality and restrained proportion. It pairs naturally with mid-century furniture but also grounds a contemporary space with the timeless authority of genuine Carrara marble. A small table with a large presence.
