Florence Knoll did not design furniture to draw attention to itself. Florence Knoll (1917-2019) was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century American design. Trained at the Cranbrook Academy and the Illinois Institute of Technology under Mies van der Rohe, she brought an architectural discipline to furniture and interior design that transformed corporate and residential spaces alike. Her tables, sofas and credenzas — produced by the Knoll company she co-founded with Hans Knoll — became the furnishing vocabulary of modern American life.
