A complete set of six matching chairs from the eighteenth century is a genuinely rare find. These French side chairs, crafted from solid oak sometime between 1700 and 1800, have survived more than two centuries together — through revolutions, world wars and countless changes of ownership — arriving in the present as a testament to the quality of French provincial craftsmanship.
The oak has been worked with precision and care. Beautifully turned elements define the legs and stretchers, each spindle and baluster shaped on a lathe by hand. The joints are traditional mortise-and-tenon construction, visible in places where the wood has shrunk slightly over the centuries — a mark of authenticity that confirms these are genuine period chairs, not later reproductions. The wood has developed a deep, warm patina that only genuine age can produce, with each chair showing its own unique pattern of wear.
All six chairs are in good condition for their age. The wear is consistent with over two hundred years of daily use and adds enormously to their appeal and authenticity. The structures are sound, the joints remain tight, and the chairs are functional for sitting — remarkable for furniture of this age. Each chair stands 97 centimetres tall with a seat height of 45 centimetres.
French provincial furniture from the eighteenth century represents a distinct tradition within European decorative arts. Unlike the elaborate court furniture produced in Paris, these chairs reflect the skills of regional ateliers — craftsmen who worked in solid local hardwoods and relied on structural integrity rather than gilding or veneer. The result is furniture that was built to endure, and these six chairs are living proof of that philosophy.
Around a dining table, these chairs create an atmosphere that no modern furniture can replicate. They bring the weight and warmth of genuine history into a room, connecting daily life to centuries of French domestic tradition.
