The CH30 is the kind of chair that ends arguments about what constitutes good design. Drawn by Hans J. Wegner and manufactured by Carl Hansen & Son in Odense, Denmark, it distils everything the Danish Modern movement stood for into a single, elegant form — the curved backrest, the tapered legs, the joinery that you notice because it is so beautiful, not because it fails.
The teak frames carry the warmth and depth that only seventy years of natural ageing can produce. The wood has been carefully restored, bringing back its original lustre while preserving the rich, honey-toned character of vintage teak. The seats have been re-upholstered in Hallingdal 65/200 by Kvadrat — the revered Danish textile house — in virgin wool that honours the original material intent.
This set of four is in very good condition. The restoration work has been thorough and respectful: structural integrity fully addressed, surfaces refreshed, new upholstery applied with the precision these chairs deserve. They are ready for another lifetime of daily use.
Wegner designed the CH30 in 1954, during a period of extraordinary productivity. It sits alongside the Wishbone Chair and the Shell Chair in his catalogue — less famous perhaps, but no less accomplished. The combination of teak and oak in the frame was typical of Wegner's resourceful approach to materials, using each wood where its properties served best.
Around a dining table, these chairs transform a meal into an occasion. They are light enough to pull out with one hand, comfortable enough to linger in long after the plates have been cleared. This is what investment-grade design looks like.
