Jean-Pierre Vitrac is one of the most quietly influential figures in French post-war design. Born in 1944, his career spans collaborations with Airborne — contributing to the legendary AA chair — and elegant luminaires for Disderot, as well as celebrated tableware for Villeroy & Boch. His work lives in the permanent collections of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Porte Manteaux for Manade is among his most recognisable creations.

The piece is adjustable, rising to 185 centimetres, and constructed from lacquered metal and chrome with characteristic Vitrac precision. Every line serves a purpose; every curve balances function with visual harmony. The chrome elements catch the light, while the lacquered surfaces provide graphic contrast. It is practical, elegant, and deceptively simple — the hallmarks of great French product design.

This example is in good condition and fully functional. The adjustable mechanism works smoothly, and the lacquer and chrome finishes have been well preserved. It stands stable and ready for daily use.

Vitrac received the prestigious Rene Gabriel prize in 1964, and his commitment to marrying practicality with timeless aesthetics has remained consistent throughout a career spanning six decades. The Porte Manteaux embodies this philosophy perfectly — it is a coat rack that happens to be a design object, or perhaps a design object that happens to hold coats.

In a hallway, studio, or open-plan living space, this piece announces an appreciation for considered design before a single word of conversation has been exchanged. It is sought after by collectors and vintage enthusiasts worldwide — and for good reason.
