The name Kalmar is synonymous with Austrian lighting at its most refined. Founded in Vienna, the house of J.T. Kalmar produced some of the twentieth century's most celebrated luminaires — from grand chandeliers for public buildings to intimate domestic fixtures like this pair of ceiling lamps, where the same attention to craft and material is evident in miniature.
Glass and brass work together here as they have in Viennese design tradition for over a century. The glass elements diffuse and soften the light, creating a warm, ambient glow, while the brass fittings provide structural elegance and the golden warmth that is a Kalmar signature. The proportions are compact — 30 centimetres across and 27 centimetres in height — making them suitable for hallways, bedrooms, or any space where refined overhead lighting is needed.
This pair is in good condition with wear consistent with over six decades of use. The brass has developed a gentle patina that adds warmth, and the glass elements remain intact. Together, they tell a story of continuous, appreciated use.
Julius Theodore Kalmar drew on the avant-garde movements of his era — from Wiener Werkstatte craft traditions to post-war modernism — to create lighting that was both contemporary and timeless. The company's work can be found in institutions ranging from the Vienna State Opera to private collections worldwide.
Sold as a pair, these lamps offer the rare opportunity to create symmetry — flanking a hallway, framing a bed, or punctuating a living room with matched points of warm, considered light.
