The D70 is one of those rare designs where engineering and elegance become indistinguishable. Designed by Osvaldo Borsani in 1954 for Tecno — the company he co-founded with his brother Fulgenzio — it is a sofa that refuses to be just one thing.
Through an ingenious mechanical system, the D70 adjusts into approximately eighteen to twenty different positions, from upright seating to a fully flat daybed. The black lacquered tubular metal frame supports this transformation with quiet precision, while brass adjustment details add a refined, jewellery-like quality to the mechanism. The engineering is hidden in plain sight: every pivot, every hinge, every angle feels deliberate.
This example is in original condition, with the honest patina that comes from decades of thoughtful use. The frame is structurally sound and the adjustment mechanism works as intended. The upholstery shows wear consistent with age — a quality that many collectors actively seek, as it confirms authenticity and provenance. A fresh upholstery job would restore it to showroom condition for those who prefer it.
Osvaldo Borsani (1911–1985) was a pivotal figure in postwar Italian design. His work for Tecno — alongside pieces like the P40 lounge chair — demonstrated that industrial production and artisanal quality need not be mutually exclusive. The D70 remains one of his most celebrated achievements, a fixture in design museum collections worldwide.
In a living room, a study, or a bedroom, the D70 is more than furniture. It is a machine for living, as Le Corbusier might have said — beautiful at rest, transformative in use.
