This is not merely a coffee table. It is a permanent botanical archive of the French Riviera, pressed into stoneware and fired at temperatures that turned wild Provencal herbs into fossilised art. Roger Capron's Garrigue series remains one of the most original achievements in postwar ceramic design, and this table is a beautiful example of why.

The technique is as remarkable as its results. Capron's team foraged for native vegetation from the garrigue — the scrubby, aromatic landscape of southern France — collecting wild thyme, rosemary, grasses, and other specimens. These plants were pressed directly into wet stoneware tiles. During kiln firing at high temperatures, the organic matter incinerated completely, leaving behind detailed negative impressions: fossilised shadows of plants that grew under the Mediterranean sun decades ago.

This example is in good condition with only minor signs of use. The ceramic tiles retain their textural depth and warmth, and the wooden base is solid and stable. At 118 centimetres long and 46 centimetres wide, it has the proportions of a generously sized rectangular coffee table that works well in both modern and rustic interiors.

Roger Capron (1922-2006) was a pivotal figure in the postwar ceramic renaissance of Vallauris, the Provencal town famously revitalised by Pablo Picasso. By the late 1960s, Capron shifted from hand-painted geometric forms to embrace what might be called organic modernism — pioneering an early form of biophilic design that brought the natural world directly into the domestic interior.

In a living room, this Capron table becomes a conversation piece in the truest sense. Its surface tells a story of place, process, and the beautiful intersection of nature and craft. Each tile is unique, each impression unrepeatable — a quality that no contemporary reproduction can match.
