The cantilever chair is one of modernism's most enduring ideas — a seat that appears to defy gravity by eliminating the traditional four-legged structure. Willem Hendrik Gispen's S411, produced by Thonet, is one of the finest expressions of this concept: elegant, comfortable, and built with an engineer's precision.
The chrome-plated tubular steel frame is the structural and visual foundation. Its continuous, flowing line creates a sense of lightness that belies the chair's considerable stability. The spring of the cantilevered form provides a subtle, responsive comfort — the chair gives slightly under your weight, adapting to your movements in a way that rigid chairs cannot match. The combination of steel, wood armrests, and upholstered seat and back creates a satisfying interplay of hard and soft, industrial and domestic.
This example features an original steel frame with a beautiful patina that speaks to its age and authenticity. The upholstery was renewed approximately eight years ago and remains in good condition. The chrome shows the gentle dulling and character marks that collectors prize — evidence of decades of genuine use rather than warehouse storage.
Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890–1981) was a pioneer of Dutch industrial design and a key figure in the country's contribution to the Bauhaus movement. His work for Thonet — the company that essentially invented bent-wood and tubular steel furniture — produced designs that remain in production today, still faithful to the original specifications. The S411 is among the most celebrated: a chair that has furnished homes, offices, and design museums for nearly a century.
In a dining room, a home office, or as an accent piece in a living space, the S411 brings modernist clarity and genuine comfort. It is the kind of chair that improves every room it enters.
