West German Pottery from the 1960s represents one of the most dynamic chapters in postwar European ceramics. This Scheurich and Greulich vase — model 239/30 from the Foreign series — is a bold, expressive example of what made that movement so collectible.
The dramatic black base colour serves as a backdrop for swirling lines of white and yellow that animate the surface with kinetic energy. Each line was applied by hand, giving this particular vase a character that is uniquely its own. The glazing interacts with the light differently at every angle, creating a visual experience that rewards prolonged viewing. At 40 centimetres tall and 28 centimetres wide, it has the scale and presence to serve as a standalone sculptural object.
This example is in good condition with no chips or cracks. The glaze is vibrant and well-adhered, and the piece shows only slight signs of age — the kind of honest patina that confirms authenticity. It functions beautifully both as a display piece and as a practical flower vase.
Scheurich, founded in 1928 in Kleinheubach, Bavaria, became one of the most prolific producers of the West German Pottery movement. Their collaboration with Greulich produced some of the most expressive designs of the era, characterised by bold colour combinations, textured glazes, and confident forms. The 239/30 model is particularly sought after by WGP collectors for its dramatic contrast and gestural surface treatment.
On a console table, a bookshelf, or a mantlepiece, this vase brings the exuberant spirit of 1960s German design into a contemporary setting. Whether holding a bouquet or standing on its own, it is a piece that demands attention — and rewards it generously.
