The Pigreco is one of those rare chairs that you recognize from across a room — not because it shouts, but because its proportions are so precisely resolved that they register almost subconsciously. Designed by Tobia Scarpa around 1956-1957 and put into production by the legendary Bolognese manufacturer Gavina from 1960 onward, it remains one of the most elegant expressions of Italian rationalist furniture.

The construction is deceptively simple. Four walnut legs taper downward, but the two rear legs sit so close together that they read as a single support — the so-called "sister legs" that give the chair its distinctive triangular silhouette when viewed from the side. Above, a curved plywood backrest floats free of the frame, connected by a minimal joint that allows it to flex subtly with the sitter's weight. The upholstered seat appears to hover within the wooden skeleton, creating a lightness that contradicts the chair's solid walnut construction.

This set of three has been professionally reupholstered in a graphic fabric that complements the warmth of the wood without competing with it. The walnut itself is exceptional — deep, rich grain with the kind of amber patina that only decades of careful use can produce. Structurally, all three chairs are sound, with tight joints and no wobble.

Tobia Scarpa, son of the great Carlo Scarpa, began his career designing furniture with his wife Afra. Their work for Gavina, and later for B&B Italia and Cassina, defined a particular strain of Italian modernism: rigorous in construction, warm in material, and always attentive to how a piece feels in use rather than merely how it looks. The Pigreco predates their most famous collaborations but already contains the DNA of everything that followed.

Three matching Pigreco chairs in this condition are increasingly difficult to find. Around a dining table, along a hallway, or simply as sculptural objects in a living room, they carry the kind of quiet authority that only authentic mid-century Italian design can deliver.
