Italian lighting from the 1970s has a particular quality that separates it from everything else produced in that decade. It tends to be sculptural first and functional second, treating light as a material to be shaped rather than simply directed. These Veca wall sconces — a matched pair in soft pink Murano glass — embody that philosophy perfectly.

Each sconce consists of two vertically stacked oval glass discs, hand-blown on the island of Murano using techniques that date back centuries. The pink tint is not painted or coated; it is integral to the glass itself, mixed into the molten material before blowing. This means the color is consistent, luminous, and impossible to replicate with modern shortcuts. When lit, the discs transform from translucent pink to a warm, almost candlelit glow that softens any wall they are mounted on.

Both sconces are in original condition with intact glass and functioning hardware. The metal mounting plates show the kind of light oxidation you would expect from fifty years of life, which only adds to their authenticity. Each sconce measures twenty-eight centimeters high by eleven wide — compact enough for a hallway or bathroom, striking enough for a living room or bedroom.

Veca was one of several Italian manufacturers who recognized that Murano's glass-blowing tradition could be directed toward contemporary lighting design. Operating primarily in the 1960s and 1970s, they produced sconces, pendants, and table lamps that bridged the gap between artisanal craft and industrial production. Their work is now actively collected, with prices rising steadily as supply diminishes.

As a pair, these sconces create a symmetry that works beautifully flanking a mirror, a doorway, or a piece of art. The pink tone is subtle enough to complement most color palettes while adding a warmth that cooler, clear-glass alternatives simply cannot match. They are, in the best sense, objects that improve a room just by being in it.
