There is a reason why Murano glass lighting from the 1970s continues to command attention: nothing else casts light quite the same way. These Veca wall sconces — a matched pair in smokey grey — are a masterclass in how hand-blown glass can transform something as simple as a wall-mounted light into an atmospheric experience.

Each sconce features five vertically arranged oval glass discs, hand-blown on the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon. The smokey black-grey tint runs through the glass itself, creating a depth and translucency that shifts depending on whether the lamp is on or off. Unlit, the discs have a cool, almost graphite quality. Switch them on, and they diffuse a warm, amber-tinged glow that softens hard edges and creates an immediate sense of intimacy.

Both sconces are in honest, original condition. The Murano glass is free of chips or cracks, and the metal mounting hardware retains its original finish with light patina. Each unit measures twenty-eight centimeters high by ten wide with a fourteen-centimeter depth — a compact profile that works in corridors, bathrooms, bedrooms, and living spaces equally well.

Veca operated at the intersection of Murano's centuries-old glass-blowing tradition and the modernist design sensibility that defined 1970s Italy. Their lighting designs stripped away ornamentation in favor of geometric purity, letting the material itself — its color, its translucency, its handmade irregularities — do the expressive work. This approach resonated with the broader Italian design ethos of the period, shared by contemporaries like Venini, Mazzega, and Seguso.

Mounted on either side of a mirror, flanking a piece of artwork, or simply illuminating a dark hallway, these sconces bring a distinctly Italian warmth to any space. The smokey grey tone is neutral enough to pair with virtually any palette while adding the kind of subtle drama that only hand-blown glass can provide. Priced for the pair.
