Every now and then an everyday object crosses over into art on purpose, and this Italian road sign is exactly that. The blank itself is the real thing — a triangular construction warning sign with a safety-orange border around a pale field — but the figure inside it has been painted by hand. It is the classic Italian 'lavori in corso' worker leaning on a shovel, yet the little topknot turns the silhouette into a wry 'woman at work'. You smile before you can help it.
Turn it over and the story comes into focus. The metal is stamped 'Panseri — Bergamo 1982', the mark of a genuine Lombard sign-maker still working near Bergamo today, so the blank is firmly dated and Italian. Alongside it, on a small label, is a name: Carolino Rego — a Beaux-Arts-trained decorative painter who spent decades working in Milan and Lombardy. It points, quietly, to the hand that turned a municipal sign into something with wit.
The charm is all in the surface. Years outdoors have weathered the orange to a soft, rusted patina, the field clouded and scuffed, the brushwork of that black figure still confident beneath it. None of it is restored or faked — this is honest, hard-won character, the kind interior stylists pay good money to imitate and never quite manage.
It still stands on its original metal feet, so it can lean against a wall, anchor a corner or prop in a loft exactly as it does in the photo. Substantial and graphic, it reads from across a room, and it sits perfectly among the bolder end of our collection — beside our Andy Warhol exhibition poster, or the rest of our curated vintage objects.
Like every piece at Vintz, it was hand-picked for character rather than restored, then shipped worldwide in a custom wooden crate, fully insured. Lean it in a hallway, a studio or a loft and let it do what great found art does — start the conversation.
