Italian Stilnovo-Style 8-Arm Chandelier, Brass & Black

This Italian eight-arm chandelier is pure mid-century theatre. From a single brass sphere at its heart, eight slender arms radiate outward like a sputnik caught mid-spin, each one tipped with a black diabolo shade — that unmistakable double-cone silhouette that defined Italian lighting in the post-war years. Switched off, it already reads as sculpture. Switched on, it throws light both up and down, washing a ceiling and a table at once.

The shades are the detail that earns a second look. Each matte-black cone is pricked with a neat ring of tiny perforations, so a faint constellation of dots glows around every rim when the bulbs are lit. The warm brass collars, sphere and arms set off the black beautifully — a graphic, almost architectural contrast that designers like Stilnovo made into a whole visual language through the 1950s and 60s.

Run your hand along an arm and you feel the honest weight of solid brass, its lacquer worn to a soft, living glow in the places hands and time have touched it. This example is in good condition, with only minor signs of use — the kind of gentle patina that tells you a piece has genuinely been lived with rather than left in a showroom.
