Murano Sommerso Teardrop Glass Table Lamp Base, Blue

This Murano sommerso glass lamp base is a genuine piece of Italian glass artistry. The body is a heavy, hand-blown teardrop of crystal-clear glass, and suspended deep inside it — never touching the surface — floats a sculptural comma of cobalt blue edged in bright turquoise. That 'submerged' layering is the famous sommerso technique, and the effect is mesmerising: the colour seems to hang in mid-air, shifting and glowing as you move around it.

The form belongs to the great Murano tradition led by Flavio Poli, the artistic director who made sommerso world-famous at Seguso Vetri d'Arte in the 1950s and 60s. This piece is offered in that manner — unsigned, as many fine Murano pieces are, but with all the weight, clarity and confident asymmetry that define the best work of the period. It is mounted on a polished chrome oval base with a nickel fitting, ready to wire and use.

It is substantial in the hand and on a surface — 50 cm to the top of the fitting — and in very good condition, the glass bright and free of chips, a real sculptural object whether lit or not.
