Vintage Italian Flamingo Table Lamp, Brass & Bamboo

This vintage Italian flamingo table lamp is pure 1970s theatre. Two slender brass birds rise on long, curving necks from a black wooden base, their bodies caught mid-stretch as if they have just waded in from somewhere far more tropical than your living room. It is sculpture first and lamp second — though it happens to do both beautifully.

The birds are the heart of it. Each one is hand-shaped in solid brass, the metal warmed by decades of honest patina into a soft, antique gold that no new finish can fake. Run a finger along a neck and you feel the maker's hand in every curve; look closely and the two figures lean toward one another, giving the whole piece a quiet, almost affectionate poise.

Above them, a slim bamboo stem carries the shade — and the lamp can be dressed two ways. Shown here in a deep emerald-green velvet drum that turns the whole piece jewel-like and calm, it wears that quiet, sophisticated look beautifully; but it can equally take a bold tropical palm-print for a more maximalist, exotic mood. Busy or understated, the brass base carries either with ease. With a crisp white lining the shade throws a soft, flattering light, and the lamp is fully functional, wired for a standard E14 fitting and ready to switch on the day it arrives.

Animal motifs ran riot through 1970s Italian design, where makers turned brass and bamboo into playful, faintly Hollywood-Regency statements. This example is unmarked, as many of these workshop pieces are, but the casting and construction speak clearly of Italian hands. It keeps good company with the rest of our vintage design lighting, or a more austere counterpoint like our brutalist bronze table lamp.
